It’s official! 2008 is the Year of Cycling in Aylesbury. The announcement from Cycle Aylesbury, the Bucks County Council campaign to increase cycling in the town, comes as Aylesbury enters its third and final year as a designated UK cycling demonstration town. Since being selected as a showpiece cycling town two years ago, cycling figures in Aylesbury have tripled.
The 2008 Year of Cycling will be a festival of cycling aimed at getting even more people in Aylesbury on their bikes and enjoying the benefits and freedom that cycling brings. The programme will include Cycle with Confidence Camps, free cyclist training for children and families, school cycling initiatives, a cycling for health campaign, maps for each Gemstone Cycleway, Dr Bike and cycle security marking roadshows as well as competitions and promotions to win bikes and cycling accessories.
Cabinet Member and Transportation Portfolio Holder Valerie Letheren and the Mayor of Aylesbury, Cllr Jenny Puddefoot are right behind the special year of cycling. Says Valerie Letheren, “The Cycle Aylesbury campaign has achieved so much already. The town has been recognised as a national leader in promoting cycling and we intend to get even more people on their bikes next year. 2008 will definitely be a good year for cycling!”
One of the special celebratory events to mark the Year of Cycling is a charity cycle ride to Aylesbury’s twin town Bourg en Bresse. Nineteen year old Fred Clark will make the 700 mile solo trip in April 2008 to raise funds for the Mayor’s charities – Home Start Aylesbury and Crossroads.
Says Mayor, Jenny Puddefoot, “What a great cycling adventure and for such a good cause too. This just shows that cycling really is for all! I look forward to supporting Fred in 2008 with his challenge.”
