Sapphire Way

Proposed Sapphire Way cycle path link along Cambridge Street, Aylesbury

As part of Buckinghamshire County Council’s commitment to improving pedestrian and cycling facilities in Aylesbury, we are proposing a new more direct link on the Sapphire Way cycle path, the design for which is enclosed.

As part of the scheme we intend to widen the section of footway along Cambridge Street on the south side from its junctions with Park Street and Upper Hundreds Way. We are also proposing the installation of red surfacing across side road junctions consistent with other junction treatments across the town.   The new route will make use of the underpass on Upper Hundreds Way and provide a more direct route into town for pedestrians and cyclists.

This scheme has come about in response to requests from local cycling groups, current users as well as local residents. The existing Sapphire Way cycle path runs from Bierton to the town centre and is currently well used by pedestrians and cyclists. The installation of this link in the Gemstone Cycle Way network is seen as key to providing an attractive alternative mode of travel for residents of Bierton and surrounding residential areas to the north to make short journeys into Aylesbury by bike. These improvements will also benefit pedestrians and builds on the regeneration work making Cambridge Street more attractive.

From traffic count data along the Sapphire Way, it has been noticed that a large number of cyclists are continuing along Cambridge Street rather than using the signed route along Park Street. They are currently doing this illegally with the potential for conflict with pedestrians in this area. Therefore we are proposing the widening of the footway on Cambridge Street to provide more room for all users, as well as the segregation of the route so that pedestrians and cyclists are separate reducing the potential for conflict.

As you will see from the enclosed plan it is proposed to segregate the underpass to access the town centre, so that cyclists are encouraged to use one half of the pavement and pedestrians the other. Our cyclists monitoring data indicates that more than 200 cyclists already use this underpass a week. By providing the proposed segregation, safety of all users will be improved, as people will be more aware of the potential for cyclists to be using the underpass. It is worth noting that pedestrians have right of way on the footway, and therefore cyclists will need to give way at all times. This message is communicated to cyclists through literature produced by the Cycle Aylesbury team.

The underpass has been prone to flooding in recent spells of bad weather. Further investigation of this problem is ongoing, and it is hoped that this problem can be eradicated as part of this scheme.

The Sapphire Way route improvements are part of a programme of works for Aylesbury’s Gemstone Cycleways. The creation of this widened and improved path along Cambridge Street is an important link in improving the continuity of routes for cyclists and pedestrians to the town centre and will contribute to increased safety and enjoyment of the route.

Funding for this improvement is being provided by Central Government via a grant from Cycling England and is therefore an excellent opportunity to upgrade this area, renew the condition of the pavements and upgrade dropped crossing points to make it easier for disabled users to travel in this area, whilst improving conditions for cyclists. This funding can not be used for any other purpose and has been awarded for this scheme only.

Topaz Way

Proposed new Topaz Way cycle path, Hawkslade – Town Centre

As part of Buckinghamshire County Council’s commitment to improving pedestrian and cycling facilities in Aylesbury, we are proposing a new Gemstone cycle path Topaz Way, the design for which can be viewed on the link below.

The Topaz Way will be the 9th Gemstone cycle route in Aylesbury and will provide a direct link from the residential areas in the south of the town to the town centre.  The proposed route includes Hawkslade, Walton Court and Southcourt and will access the town centre via the new Bourg Walk Bridge.

The new route will make use of existing bridleways and quiet roads, providing an attractive alternative to the car for accessing the town.  As part of the scheme we intend to widen sections of footway to a minimum 2.5m and convert to shared pedestrian/ cycle use.  The proposal also includes red surfacing across Glaven Road and Hannon Road as well as a priority raised table crossing on Tyne Road.  To improve pedestrian safety we are proposing to provide a new signal controlled toucan crossing at Ellen Road.   These measures are consistent with the other 8 Gemstone cycle routes that make up Aylesbury cycle path network.  Similar treatments have helped achieve speed reductions and can contribute to a safer and more pleasant local environment for all users.

This scheme has come about in response to requests from local residents as well as fitting well with the cycle town strategy.  The existing 8 Gemstone cycle paths are now well established and very well used.  The new cycle route will connect to Ashmead Combined School, helping students to cycle and walk safely to and from school.  The Topaz Way will plug the gap in the network to the south of Aylesbury and the route is seen as key to providing an attractive alternative mode of travel for residents of Hawkslade, Walton Court and Southcourt to make short journeys into Aylesbury and to access the south of the town by bike.

Funding for this improvement is being provided by Central Government via a grant from Cycling England.

You are invited to comment on the proposal by writing to me at the above address by no later than Friday 11th December 2009.  I look forward to hearing from you.

Emerald Way

Proposed extension of the Emerald Way cycle path, Fairford Leys to Haydon Hill

As part of Buckinghamshire County Council’s commitment to improving pedestrian and cycling facilities in Aylesbury, we are proposing to extend the Emerald Way cycle path.

Prior consultation was undertaken on this route in the summer of 2007 when a postal survey was sent out to residents of Haydon Hill.  That survey indicated that over 90% of residents were in favour of the route and would make use of it if it was improved.  A theme from the responses was the need to address speeding through the area to help make cycling and walking a more appealing option.

As part of the scheme we intend to widen the section of footpath along Brunel Road, Rabans Lane and through Haydon Hill.  We are also proposing the installation of three priority raised crossings and red surfacing consistent with other junction treatments across the town.   It is hoped that this will help achieve a speed reduction, addressing some of the concerns identified in the previous consultation, and has the potential to reduce rat running through the Haydon Hill estate.

This scheme has come about in response to requests from the Parish Council as well as local residents.  The existing Emerald Way is from Fairford Leys to the town centre and  is currently well used.  The extension of the route is seen as key to providing an attractive alternative mode of travel for residents of Haydon Hill to make short journeys into Aylesbury and to access the south of the town by bike and foot.

Funding for this improvement is being provided by Central Government via a grant from Cycling England.

Camborne Avenue (Amber Way)

Proposed zebra crossing on Camborne Avenue, Aylesbury

As part of Buckinghamshire County Council’s commitment to improving pedestrian and cycling facilities in Aylesbury, we are proposing a new zebra crossing on Camborne Avenue, the design for which can be viewed below.

This consultation follows on from the consultation of 31st October 2008 when we wrote to inform you of plans to introduce a raised crossing at the same location.  Responding to comments received in the earlier consultation we have amended the design to include a zebra crossing rather than a raised crossing.

The footpath and zebra crossing works are part of a programme of improvements for Aylesbury’s Gemstone Cycleways. The new layout is an important component in improving the continuity and priority of routes for cyclists and pedestrians to the town centre and will contribute to increased safety and enjoyment of these routes.

Funding for this improvement is being provided by Central Government via a grant from Cycling England. The technical design of the scheme is regarded as best practice and is fully endorsed by Sustrans, the leading sustainable transport charity.

Jet Way Extension

Proposed extension of Jet Way cycle route

As part of Buckinghamshire County Council’s commitment to improving pedestrian and cycling facilities in Aylesbury, we are proposing an extension of the Jet Way cycle route, the design for which can be viewed below.

As part of the scheme we intend to widen and convert to shared pedestrian/ cycle use the footpath adjacent to B4333 Lower Road out from the hospital entrance to Stoke Mandeville Combined School.  A new zebra crossing will be provided as part of the scheme opposite the entrance to the school.

This scheme has come about in response to requests from Stoke Mandeville Combined School, the Parish Council and local residents.  Pupils who live in the south of Aylesbury and attend Stoke Mandeville Combined school already use the footpath as a popular route.  Children who travel by foot or bike from Stoke Mandeville village will make use of the safer zebra crossing.

The Jet Way route improvements are part of a programme of works for Aylesbury’s Gemstone Cycleways. This route extension is an important link in improving the continuity of routes for cyclists and pedestrians to the town centre and will contribute to increased safety and enjoyment of the route.

Funding for this improvement is being provided by Central Government via a grant from Cycling England as well as a Sustrans Links to Schools grant.

This scheme assists us in achieving our targets as a national Cycle Town by providing a valuable link in the Jet Way cycle route between Stoke Mandeville village and Aylesbury town centre.
