Cycling to School

Teachers

There are so many reasons why more children should cycle to school.

Research shows that children who cycle are:

Children who cycle to school arrive brighter and more ready to learn than those driven by car. Also, just 15 minutes cycling to and from school makes a real difference to health and fitness levels including improved bone strength, joints and muscle tone.

Fact: 90% of children have a bike; over 30% would like to cycle to school but only 1% do.

Furthermore, even a small number of pupils cycling would help reduce the peak hour congestion and pollution that the 'school run' contributes to in Aylesbury. Leaving the car at home for just one day a week can cut congestion and pollution by 20%. Parents can also save money on petrol and car-running costs.

We have a variety of services for schools to promote cycling. These include;

Sustrans (www.sustrans.org.uk), which stands for sustainable transport, is a charity working on practical projects to encourage people to walk and cycle more, to help reduce motor traffic and its adverse effects.

Click here for Sustran's free Pedal Pack; a guide to organising cycle to school events to encourage children to take to two wheels and enjoy a green, health and independent way of getting around.

Sustrans runs a national Safe Routes to Schools project (www.saferoutestoschools.org.uk), an information service, aimed at schools, parents, pupils, local authorities and all those who are interested in safe routes to schools projects. The charity provides training, videos, newsletters, factsheets, teachers packs, resources, advice and networking opportunities as well as holding national and regional events and conferences.

"We have noticed a real increase in the numbers of children cycling to school. They really enjoy the independence and fresh air they get and seeing these children has definitely encouraged more children to do the same. - Headteacher, Turnfurlong Junior school"

Teaching Resources

Safe Routes to School also provide Key stage 1 and 2 and Key stage 3 and 4 teaching resources free of charge. The following downloadable resources give ideas on how the national curriculum links to Sustainable Travel as a topic. It also highlights how the School Travel Plan can be used to deliver the national curriculum.

KS 3 & 4 English Curriculum Resource

Car maker BMW has created some great KS2 classroom resources linked to many areas of the curriculum including ICT, English, maths, science and PSHE. Safe on the Street classroom resource activities include doing a bike survey, reading comprehension, and map reading.

There is also an interactive section for children, including a wet play pack, with puzzles, competitions, activities and stories hosted by characters Roxy, Tom, Jess and Max.
